WILKES-BARRE - The City of Wilkes-Barre will celebrate the 235th birthday of the United States with an old fashioned 4th of July celebration in Kirby Park on Monday. The 31st annual festival begins at noon and includes great food, crafts, and amusement rides for children of all ages including the U.S. Army rock climbing wall and Pony Party Paradise pony rides and petting zoo. Children can also enjoy the "Puppen Meister" puppet show and games. Visit the Hourigan, Kluger, and Quinn tent to receive a free bike helmet.
At 7:45 p.m., the Northeastern Pennsylvania Philharmonic concert will begin conducted by Joan Landry and featuring singer Katie Williams. The philharmonic is presented by Martz Group. The celebration will be capped-off by a spectacular fireworks show presented by Pizza Paul Pyrotechnics that will begin as soon as dusk falls. People from the entire area are encouraged to come to Kirby Park with their chairs and blankets and set their eyes skyward to enjoy the splendid fireworks extravaganza.
"The City of Wilkes-Barre puts on the finest 4th of July celebration in the Wyoming Valley," said Mayor Thomas M. Leighton, "It is a fun-filled day for the entire family and the thousands of people who flock to Kirby Park to enjoy the fireworks is truly a spectacular sight every year."
