CITY OF WILKES-BARRE ANNOUNCES "FOOD 'N FUN AT THE PARK" PROGRAM TO BEGIN JUNE 21ST IN ALL CITY PARKS

WILKES-BARRE - The City of Wilkes-Barre is pleased to announce that the 2011 "Food ‘N Fun at the Park" program will begin on Tuesday, June 21, in all city parks and Kistler pool. This program is a joint venture of the City of Wilkes-Barre, YMCA, and CEO and is an expanded version of the successful 2010 Summer Meals program that operated in 6 city parks. Throughout the summer, CEO will serve free, healthy lunches in every Wilkes-Barre park, Kistler Pool, and the Wilkes-Barre YMCA which is 21 locations citywide. Lunches will be served between 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. daily. All children are eligible to receive the meals and there is no obligation to sign-up.

This year's summer program will also include scheduled activities for children of all ages including arts, crafts, games, sports and other physical activities. The activities will be led by trained YMCA staff and City of Wilkes-Barre park attendants. The goal of the "Food N' Fun at the Park" program is to promote healthy eating by providing free and quality meals to the city's youth that might not otherwise have access to them during the summer months as well as offer organized activities in their neighborhoods for children to stay physically active, gain an appreciation of the outdoors, and develop relationships with other children in their communities.

"We have high hopes for the success of this summer program," said Mayor Thomas M. Leighton, "This type of initiative is important to promoting strong neighborhoods and improving the quality of life in the city for children as well as families. We have amazing park facilities across this city and using the parks and playgrounds to provide this service to thousands of children is an invaluable asset and an important obligation to the city."

The City of Wilkes-Barre, CEO, and YMCA will be holding a formal kick-off event for the program on Wednesday, June 22, at 5:30 p.m. at the newest city playground in Iron Triangle for parents and children to see a preview of what the program will offer this summer. For more information, please contact Drew McLaughlin in the Mayor's Office at 570-208-4140.
