2009 Downtown Collegetown Party on the Square
 |
On Wednesday, September 16, the City of Wilkes-Barre, Greater Wilkes-Barre Chamber of Business and Industry and the Diamond City Partnership welcomed over 1,500 area college students to Public Square at the 6th Annual Downtown Collegetown Party on the Square event. Students from King's College, Luzerne County Community College, Misericordia University, Penn State Wilkes-Barre and Wilkes University attended the event, where they received giveaways from over 70 area businesses. In addition, each went back to campus with a student discount card that listed over 25 deals from local businesses.
"The Downtown Collegetown Party on the Square is Northeastern PA's premier college event. Each year, it draws record crowds to Public Square, showcasing the wonderful things the Greater Wilkes-Barre Area has to offer, such as retail and restaurant options, networking and internship opportunities and the convenience and ease of downtown Wilkes-Barre. This year was no exception. There is no better way for businesses to promote themselves to the college community or for students to experience the best of the area in one place, at one time," commented Mayor Leighton.
Organizers are extremely pleased with event attendance, which has grown from about 100 students in 2004 to over 1,500 this year. For the second year in a row, the King's College Monarchs took home the Collegetown Cup trophy, which will be engraved with their name and stay on campus until next year's event.
