Intermodal Facility

$25 Million Transportation Facility

This $25 million economic development endeavor is one of the key projects in downtown Wilkes-Barre's revitalization. Located between South Washington and South Main Streets, this state-of-the-art facility will provide much-needed public parking and centralize public transportation.
The Intermodal Transportation Facility will provide downtown Wilkes-Barre with 752 additional parking spaces on six levels. Entrance and exit points will be on South Washington Street and walkways will lead from South Main Street and Public Square to the facility. In addition, access to the facility will available through Park & Lock Central, upping the number of parking spots in just this block of downtown Wilkes-Barre to over 1,000.

The facility will be the hub for Luzerne County Transportation Authority, Martz bus and taxi traffic. By centralizing these services to one location, passengers will be able to access their preferred means of transportation more easily. Passenger comfort and safety will also be improved with the construction of an interior lobby and designated pick-up/drop-off areas out of the way of traffic. In addition, businesses located around Public Square will be more visible and accessible to customers. Future phases of the City of Wilkes-Barre's Streetscape Enhancement Project (the $7.3 million initiative that has provided the downtown with over 200 streetlights to date) will make Public Square more pedestrian-friendly and increase foot traffic to local businesses.

In November 2008, the first of many truckloads of steel, concrete and crane equipment were delivered to the worksite.

"The City of Wilkes-Barre appreciates the cooperation and patience of downtown residents, business owners and customers as we work to complete this important piece of the revitalization of downtown Wilkes-Barre. Very shortly, you will be able to see the facility take shape, as we move closer to our June 2009 completion," commented Mayor Thomas M. Leighton.
