Grants


The City of Wilkes-Barre utilizes grant funding to pay for services and equipment in our various departments. Grant dollars are available from the federal, state and county levels of government to fund projects. All grants are earmarked for specific purposes and must be used to address these particular issues or needs. Grant funding is offered in either competitive or non-competitive formats. The non-competitive grants are awarded to municipalities, boroughs or townships based on a formula determined by the funding source and all participants receive some grant dollars. In contrast, competitive grants have limited pools of money and the funding sources will select the grant applications that best address the purpose of the grants and award dollars to those applicants. Therefore, the City of Wilkes-Barre may be competing against other cities throughout the entire United States, Pennsylvania or Luzerne County depending on the funding source to obtain grant funding. In most cases, the need for grant dollars far exceeds the availability of the grant funding being offered.
