The City of Wilkes-Barre is committed to making downtown Wilkes-Barre a safer, brighter place to work, live and enjoy. Through the city's $7.3 million Downtown Streetlight and Streetscape Enhancement Project, we're doing just that - one streetlight at a time.
In 2006, the City of Wilkes-Barre saw the illumination of the first 157 new streetlights along South Main, Northampton, East and West Market Streets and Public Square. The positive effects were immediately apparent. People felt more comfortable walking through the streets after dark and more businesses opened their doors.

In early 2007, the second phase of the project brought 56 new streetlights along North Main Street, extending the project north of Public Square.

In January 2009, the first streetlight of the $2 million third phase of the $7.3 million Downtown Wilkes-Barre Streetlight and Streetscape Enhancement Project was installed on North Washington Street. Upon the completion of this third phase of the downtown streetlight project, the City of Wilkes-Barre will have installed over 300 streetlights in just over three years. This phase of the comprehensive street lighting plan for the downtown will add 116 streetlight poles to sections of Franklin, Washington, Northampton and Union Streets and is expected to be completed in the summer of 2009.
